Which Elantra you can import from China

Beijing Hyundai has been building the seventh-generation Elantra (CN7) since 2021. Versions you can order:

For most buyers, a recent-year 1.5 Elantra is the best choice: wide availability, left-hand drive, and the reduced recycling fee. Russian-market Elantras from the 6th and 7th generations (1.6 and 2.0 liter, 128–150 hp) are only found on the local secondary market — we cover what to check on them below.

New Hyundai Elantra 2026 from China: trims

In June 2026, Beijing Hyundai started selling the model-year-2026 Elantra. Styling and mechanicals stayed the same, but the equipment list was revised:

• Three trims: GLS, GLX and LUX. Prices in China run from about ¥99,800 to ¥123,800.
• Instrument cluster: an 8″ digital cluster on GLS and GLX, a 10.25″ one on the top LUX trim.
• What was removed: the mid-tier GLX lost navigation, heated steering wheel and some online services.
• What was added: a pair of USB-C ports on every version.

Bottom line: if you want a heated steering wheel but your budget is a GLX, look at a 2024–2025 Elantra in that trim, or go straight for the LUX. We check the infotainment's Russian-language support and the specific car's options during sourcing — before you put down any money.

Elantra under 160 hp: why customs clearance stays cheap

Since 1 December 2025, the reduced recycling fee for individuals has remained in place only for vehicles up to 160 hp and up to 3 liters of displacement, imported for personal use. Every mainstream Elantra comfortably fits within this threshold:

Conditions for the reduced rate: the car is imported for personal use, no more than one per person per year, and not resold within a year of import — otherwise the fee is recalculated at the commercial rate.

New or a "sweet spot" age: how duty is calculated on the Elantra

Customs duty for individuals depends on the car's age:

• Up to 3 years old — a percentage of the customs value (48–54% for cars in this class), but no less than the minimum rate per cc. For a new Elantra, this is the most expensive option in terms of payments.
• 3 to 5 years old — based on engine displacement alone. For the 1.5-liter engine (1,497 cc), the rate is €1.7/cc, so about €2,545 in duty.
• Older than 5 years — €3.2/cc, almost double — importing cars this old usually isn't worth it.

Used Hyundai Elantra in Moscow: what to check

Demand for a used Elantra in Moscow and the region is high, but there are plenty of cars with "surprises" too. A minimum checklist before buying:

• Taxi and car-sharing use. Hyundai sedans often worked in taxi fleets — we check the VIN against taxi registries and compare steering wheel and seat wear against the mileage.
• Mileage and history. Traffic-police databases, service records, insurance claims, number of owners.
• Engine. On the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engines of earlier generations — oil consumption and cylinder condition (via endoscope); on the 1.5 — smooth idling and no leaks.
• Transmission. The IVT CVT is sensitive to the fluid-change schedule: we check for smooth acceleration without jerks; on conventional automatics, we check for shift shock.

• Suspension. Ball joints and anti-roll bar links are wear items, but their condition helps reveal the car's real usage history.
